New! – 500 Series Rack Accessories

Hi everyone,

I have recently added a few new items to my classicapi store. They are for the popular 500 series rack set-ups. The main basis for these parts is for users to complete our GroupDIY 51x rack project.

The blank plates are of course compatible with any 500 series rack featuring the standard 1.5” width, 5.25” height and a thickness of .125”. The plates are made from the hard and durable 6061-T6 aluminum and have the proper #4 countersunk module screw holes. I have two variations of the plates in stock. The 51x-B-B is a matte black powdercoated plate and the 51x-B-R is a vibratory polished raw plate. The idea behind the raw is for prototyping modules or a user supplied custom paint job. Flames, pin stripping…you get the idea! Blank plates are made in the USA.

The matte black plates start at $8.50 each while the raw ones start at $7.00 each. Quantity discounts are available and shown on the store product listings.

Triton Audio D2O 500-series mic pre(Siemens V72) available early 2010

D2O is a low noise discrete microphone preamp inspired by the famous German preamps of the 40's and 50's. It comes in two versions: an all jFet design and a Hybrid tube/fet preamp. D2O's general layout consists of a Lundahl 1538 input transformer followed by a 2 stage amplifier with enough gain to amplify all types of microphones. Output drive is supplied by a discrete low impedance jFet buffer with superb sonic properties. Quality Paper in oil coupling capacitors are used, all other used components are high-end grade aswell.

500 series versions will be available early 2010

Price(not official):
"$600-$700 for the FET and $700-$800 for the tube version"

New SCA Rack w/DAW control+New Pres, Summing Module, Eq’s, and Compressors+500 series compatible

We've been working hard on our new modular rackmount system and are getting closer to a full announcement, but here's a sneak peek at an early prototype and some details on the system. Some basic features include:

* 3U high x 1 3/4" wide modules.
* All functions digitally controlled via front panel or VST plug-in.
* Rear module panel can accommodate 2 XLRs, 2 DB25s, or lots of other possible connectors.
* Backplane supports +/30V supply rails, 11 balanced buses, 2 channels of serial communication, 4 balanced IOs per module, and lots of ground connections.
* 3U chassis accommodates 8 modules, ethernet bridge, and power supply.

The preamp shown is the first in a series of modules for the new rack format. Features include:

* -10dB to +72dB gain in 1/2dB steps.
* Input pad (before input transformer)
* Output pad (after output transformer)
* Switchable input sources - XLR1, XLR2, DI, and Line
* Switchable input impedance (300 ohms and 1200 ohms)
* Switchable load impedance (600 ohms and 10K ohms)
* 100 Hz high pass filter
* Slow-ramp phantom power switching
* Output mute (automatically mutes during phantom power switching)
* Balanced insert (pre or post mute via jumper)
* Input and output metering. 10mS peak superimposed on 300mS VU bar graph, plus numeric readouts

Note that the front panel only has one knob, a continuous optical encoder and push button. The full-color OLED display indicates the status of all functions. The big idea behind this system is uncompromised hardware coupled with seamless DAW integration, so if you're in love with lots of knobs and switches this won't be for you. The reason for the "soft" interface is that, unlike systems such as SSL's, we'll be able to offer full automation as well as simple recall.

We'll revise the PCB once more before release, so if anyone has a suggestion for a "must have" feature it's possible we'll get it in there. Upcoming modules include a transformerless preamp, mixer/summing module, master module, and eventually EQ and dynamics modules.

Some anticipated FAQs and answers:

1. Are these kits?
No.
2. Will your existing kits fit in the new chassis?
No.
3. Will you be releasing kits for the new chassis?
We have no plans to do so at this time.
4. Are you discontinuing your existing kits?
No.
5. What will these new modules cost?
Pricing isn't determined, but they should be competitive with 500 series modules.
6. Will the new chassis accept 500 series modules?
Not directly, but we plan to offer an adapter at some point that will accommodate 500 series modules.

7. When will they be available?
We're planning to show the chassis and at least one module at NAMM in January. We should have stock some time in the first quarter.
8. Is the preamp based on any particular existing pre from SCA's lineup, or otherwise?
The first preamp uses two class-A amplifier modules plus a class-A output amp in the spirit of a Neve 1290, but there are as many differences as similarities.
9. Will there be support for RTAS?
Eventually, but VST on Windows will be first since that's easiest for us.
