900 Rack Power Supply DIY project and PCB

FS900+_stuffed_board_small

cool mnats project:

I needed to rack a DBX 900 module recently. The modules require +/-15V and +/-24V. I decided to use their FS900 power supply schematic but made a few changes like adding circuit protection for bonehead wiring errors and a 50 cent cap for improved ripple performance. Since I went through the trouble of designing a board, I just decided to have some prototype boards professionally manufactured:

It's double-sided, but you could probably just etch the bottom layer and run a few wires from the bottom of the board. Self-etch files, BOM and schematic here: http://mnats.net/files/FS900+_V1.0_DOC.pdf

The layout has been tested and appears to work fine, but the module itself has some problems that I now need to work out Sad Regulators and pass transistors all on one side - use insulators and attach to a single surface for easy mounting.

There are a few prototype boards left that I'll sell on my White Market thread

classicapi.com*VP2x Assembly Guide for 500 Series*Now Complete!!!

Picture 8

Hey everyone,

As some of you may know, I offer a couple affordable 500 series, all discrete mic preamp kits over at my store, classicapi.com. I do offer them in fully assembled, tested versions also but the kits seem to be the most popular thing these days. I guess when you look at the “bang for buck” ratio, I don’t think they can be beat. They have been available now for almost a full year with an excellent proven track record.

The kits started off over at Prodigy and have been migrating this way to gs over the last few months. I could tell by some of the inquiries that customers were very much newb’s to DIY work. After noticing this progression, I started on a very detailed and complete, step-by-step Assembly Guide. This guide will take any and all guess work out of populating the PCB and the little quirks of physical assembly. I wanted to make sure that if a person has decent tools and can build a clean guitar cable, that this mic preamp kit would be a logical “first DIY project”.

I am also making this guide a free download for any and everyone. This way, if you are not sure about the kit, download the docs, read them over and get a feel for it before investing any hard earned money.

Click to download the VP2x Assembly Guide

VP2x Features:

* All discrete, vintage style circuitry with 60 db of overall gain
* Continuously variable control of Preamp Gain over a 34 db range
* Mute switch for quite & safe switching of microphones
* Polarity reversal
* 20 db Pad for input attenuation
* 48V switchable phantom power
* Fully variable, custom made output attenuator
* Custom made, Ed Anderson EA2622 1:7 input transformer
* Custom made, Ed Anderson EA2623-1 or EA2503 output transformer
* Standard 2520 DOA footprint mounts in Mill-Max sockets
* Standard 500 series compatible
* GroupDIY 51x compatible
* Multiple pre-built or kit form 2520's are available

More details can be found at the beginning of the Assembly Guide along with suggested and required tools and some important tips/pointers.

For some quick background, this preamp is directly based on the console preamp out of mid ‘70’s, vintage API™ console. It is not a 312 preamp. They sound distinctly different but still from the same great family of mid aggressiveness. I think they also prove that they don't have to be old to sound vintage!

My goal for this Assembly Guide was to have an interested but inexperienced person read it and come away with the "I can do it!" attitude. I hope I have done my job.

X-mas opto comp:
Its a tube opto comp similar to the famous La2a.
However, there are a few things about the La2a that i dont like. Mainly the audio amp is ackward. So I changed that to my own liking. The sidechain is a fairly straightforward AC amp driving a ELP. Anyways, it turned out pretty good and sounds fantastic.

*note that this project will not be offered as a DIY project. Meaning that there is not going to be any indepth schematics or build instructions.

Quad SSL 9K style preamp DIY kits/prebuilt units AU$700($614 US/385 GBP) + Shipping

9kquadpreamp

from gearslutz:

Quad 9k Style Preamps. Kits or built units.
9K Style 4 channel Preamp.

I'm putting together a group buy for 9k style preamps (yes that 3 letter company, this is built off the same design, this is NOT an SSL, it is merely BASED off one of their designs that is readily available, just like the purple mc77 or the various neve clones). These will come in two versions. For those that know much about electronics, all caps that aren't ceramic (pf values) or electrolytic are Wima polypropolene films (i think one is polyester though)

NOTE: This is a feeler, if i don't get atleast 10 people on board for atleast the cases it will not go ahead. I have posted this elsewhere so hopefully numbers aren't a problem.

It seems like most people don't want kits so i'm offering fully built units as well. The pres will have custom designed cases and each channel has pad/phase/+48v. Along with just full kits of course.

Here is the case design, power switch comes in green or red.

I'll be putting these together in 2010 so i'm just getting numbers at the moment. I need minimum 10 people to get this going. This was originally posted in the aussie forums but so far not getting the numbers i need.

Pricing

Fully Built and Tested Kit - AU$780 + Shipping.
(WARNING: I'm going to make sure everything is working fine etc, but i can't offer a full warranty because after everything is tested and working fine, its just the very low chance that a component fails, which is completely out of my control.)

Unbuilt Kit - AU$700 + Shipping
(I will document the first build for those who want to give this a try as well as point people toward more information on the building of this pre, but i simply don't have the time to help everyone individually. You may also need to obtain your own thermal compound which is optional for a few heatsinks)

Prices subject to change depending on the fluctuating Aussie dollar.

All pricing includes full building and testing of the units. Pricing includes only parts and labour costs as well as shipping of the parts to me.

These preamps (the actual preamp not the original it is based off) have been described as clean preamps from multiple sources.

If you are interested, please say for which and a rough time frame on when you would be prepared to pay.

9/10 + 1 for no case and +4 on the maybe list.
