"About the Gates Level Devil -
The amplifier as shipped has two input pads (10dB and 20dB) connected in the circuit. If the level from the console is +8 VU, this loss (30dB) will result in a -22 VU at the input transformer. This will allow the input attenuator AT3 to operate about the center of its range. For higher or lower signal levels into the amplifier the pads should be rewired to give the desired level (about -20 VU) at the input transformer.
The level devil amplifier consists of 4 stages of audio amplification and a control section. The power supply furnishes unregulated voltages to non-critical stages and regulated voltages to the critical stages.

"Here is an Altec 436c with quite a few useful mods. First of all, the unit has been recapped with new power supply caps, and the audio caps have been hand matched for balance in the push-pull circuit.
The output has been wired for the lower 150 ohm output voltage which comes out directly on terminals 1 & 2; there is also an attenuator output on 3 & 4. This allows lowering the out level to avoid clipping into the DAW. XLR connectors are provided.
The Gain Mod switch revises the gain structure between the first and second tubes and solves most of the excessive gain problems of the original design. It also improves the low end.
The Line Amp switch disables the compression circuit and accomplishes the same result as pulling out the diode tube as instructed in the Altec manual. This allows you to pass signals thru the altec to gain some tube color.
Fast Attack speeds up the attack time a noticable amount from the stock value.
For those who want the authentic hold function feature, that is available here with a switch, and this has the advantage that the release time can be an infinitely variable pot instead of fixed values. Just switch Hold, and the gain reduction freezes as long as you want.
Release time and threshold are front panel controlled.
Unity gain is around the 4 position on the volume knob.
The 6BC8 tube balance is handled with a rear panel control and a set of mini pin jacks which are connected to the plates. Just put a voltmeter on those pins and adjust for the least voltage. This is much more precise than a pushbutton and ticking routine.
The tubes are american made NOS; the diode tube is a Telefunken; a spare set of tubes is included.
Proper rack mount holes have been drilled so that the front panel does not need to be opened to mount the unit."

"Ahhh...Mega rare tube "valve" vintage compressor limiter. Circa late 1960's. Made by NYC area legendary engineer and tech Bob Fine. Bob took a Pultec MB-1 tube mic preamp (one of the best mic pre's ever made) and added a compressor circuit to it. Front panels of these were sprayed black with cutout for VU meter added. Really a killer unit. I bought this 10+ years ago from a well known producer. What else I know: Handful of units made. Still in use at Sear Sound (actually got a schematic after contacting the legendary late Mr. Sear). Used by Sonic Youth extensively for guitar compression. The great Sigma Sound in Philadelphia also had some of these back in the day. Also mentioned in Tape Op No. 70, page 40, in interview with TJ Doherty (Wilco, Sonic Youth, Beth Orton, Malkmus, Steely Dan, Jon Spencer, the Killers w/ Lou Reed- others) who says it is a "go to" comp for guitar sounds as it is very fast. C. Robert "Bob" Fine also ran his own studio at one time as I've seen pics of Todd Rundgren and the Nazz recording there, and a pioneer of stereo recording (Mercury Living Presence series) and mentor/associate of Walter Sear. Very rarely up for sale. On par with Neve, Universal Audio, Langevin."

"Offered here is a pair of rather rare and vintage Neumann U473 mastering quality compressors, limiters, and expanders in a custom made 1U rack with XLR I/O, plus external 24V PSU (100-240V). It is the modules marked A 1/2 on the pictures.
There have been used on many mixing and mastering projects in our studio. Also combined with mastering Neumann PE EQs (although pictured, they are not offered in this listing and are NOT for sale - please, don't ask), they create a great mastering combo. Great working condition, fully balanced with famous Haufe transformers I/O. Noise free.
I've tested these against many modern compressors, including tube ones (vari-mu) and I must say that Neumann is on par, not to overhype this. Given the size of these, one wonders how did Germans pull this off some 40 years ago. Great for drum overheads, or on a mixbus. Guaranteed to work 100%. We have another pair we use frequently, so these are up for grabs. You can buy Crane Song's modern compressor at twice the money asked here and chances are that these Neumanns will do just as well for most applications."
