VINTAGE RIBBON RCA 74-B JUNIOR VELOCITY MICROPHONE
Up for auction is a Vintage Ribbon RCA 74-B Junior Velocity Microphone. This classic Mic was popular with Television and Radio Broadcasters and is the little brother of the bigger 44-BX. This mic was popular because of its "Bi-Directional Figure 8 Pattern" so that it can pick up artists placed on either side of the mic, its light weight and small size. The condition of this Mic is excellent, the grill has no dents or corrosion, the included cable is in great condition, and this microphone has been tested in our shop and it works and sounds great. Good luck and happy bidding!
RCA 77C Ribbon Microphone

FROM SELLER:
"Here is an EXTREMELY rare RCA 77-C ribbon microphone that's been beautifully refinished and refurbished inside and out by legendary RCA mic tech and Cloud Microphones designer Stephen Sank. These mics were recalled by RCA due to issues with the pattern switch, RCA actually destroyed all that came in, replacing them with a 77-C1 (of which we also have two - check our other listings). The 77-C1 switches patterns by way of a small screw at the bottom of the bell, rather than the rotating band near the top of the bell like this one. As such, these are really hard to come by. I've seen one maybe every couple of years. This one has no chips and really came out looking great. The 77-C is certainly the rarest of the 77 line, outside of possibly the 77A.
The 77-C actually contains two different ribbon elements in the same gap, which allows it to beautifully function in bi-directional, uni-directional, or non-directional mode. This is switchable by rotating the protruding band on the bell. RCA originally indicated this by painting little pattern symbols on the band (as shown here), but as this was repainted and we decided not to replace these indicators, and we believe the mic to be more aesthetically pleasing without them. However, we'd be glad to paint them onto the mic, like original, if you want us to at no extra charge. We thought we'd leave it up to the buyer. The 77-C series mics sound more natural in the cardioid and omni positions than the later D and DX versions, which have a single ribbon and use a back-wave chamber and slider to accomplish the unidirectional feature. The ribbon size of the 77-C (as well as the B and C-1) is larger than that of the later model 77's, which results in a bigger sound that is more reminiscent of a 44 or other larger ribbon designs. They are really quite unique and this is the most rare of the series , which is why the value is much higher than that of the later D's and DX's, and even the slightly less rare 77-C1. Are you only interested in the sound, which is quite good on these, and not in the collectability of the ultra rare original 77-C? The C1's that we have available (which are still rare and collectible, but with a smaller pricetag) will deliver the same tone and performance and is exactly the same microphone, outside of the pattern switch being located at the bottom of the bell instead of the rotating protruding band. RCA 74B Junior Velocity Ribbon (Vintage) $1,100.00
RCA introduced the first of its ribbon velocity microphones in the early 1930’s. They were expensive, high quality units intended primarily for broadcast, film, and recording work. They saw a market for a smaller, less expensive model for less demanding applications, and so the Junior Velocity microphone was developed. It was introduced in 1935 and remained in production through the 1950's.
The RCA 74 ribbon microphone is ideal for harsh high frequency sources.
