Ampex MM1100 16 track 2″ Recorder TAPE MACHINE US $4,750

Ampex MM1100_1

Ampex MM1100_0

FROM SELLER:
"Up for sale is an Ampex MM1100 16 track 2" tape machine. The 16 track Ampex with 'black heads' is arguably one of the finest sounding analog tape recorders ever produced. This particular machine has had extensive maintenance performed recently in order to restore it to prime operating condition. This work was professionally carried out by JRF Magnetics and Analog Domain Inc. The description of the work from the previous owner who had it restored is as follows:

I recall that I purchased a set of used heads from JRF Magnetics in New Jersey and they had a great deal of life left in them. Something like 80 percent on the record and 50 percent on the playback. They polished the heads and completely checked them out and sent them to me with a head report. I then sent the machine to Analog Domain in Tempe Arizona (http://www.analogdomaininc.com/). Andy (of A.D.) then went through the Machine and and brought it up to specs. It was fully functioning and good to go when I sold it. I believe the refurbish cost me around $3600 from A.D. alone.

Indeed, the JRF head report from 2008 shows that the head life is outstanding. The erase head was new, the record head has 80% life, and the repro head has 50%!!! In other words, these heads will likely outlive you! Also, of note, these are the sonically coveted and highly sought after black heads, known for their superior low end response to the silver heads used on later machines. Of note, the MM1200 that sold last week for $5300 had remaining head life of only 20%!!!

As you can see, this machine has had over $3600 in maintenance and restoration, not including the cost of the virtually new 16 track heads. "

FS: MCI-JH10 2″ 16 TRACK TAPE MACHINE $1,150

MCI-JH10 2" 16 Track _0

Early 70's MCI-JH10 same parts as and predecessor to JH16. Heads are in great shape at least 75% all channels work and are calibrated to +6db. Comes with auto locator II. The bad news is it needs a new transport. Randy Blevins of Blevins Audio in Nashville quoted me $2500 for a fully working complete with power supplies JH100 transport that will drop right in. I was going to fix it up but I'm satisfied with my 3M-M79. Local pick up only. Item is located in Miami, FL. The parts alone especially the heads are worth several times what I'm asking. I hate to part out this gem and I'm hoping to sell it to someone who knows the value and sound or professional analog. 2" 16 track is as fat sounding as they come. What I do is record to analog and then bounce it to protools. If you need more than 16 tracks of analog then simply transfer to DAW and put on a fresh tape. Then stripe the tape with timecode and have the DAW chase the tape. Now you have 32 tracks of the fattest sound ever. I've have done this many times with a simple JL Cooper PPS2. I think I have pics of the heads and cards but I'm not sure. The item is in storage right now. It does power up and light up. VU meters move, signal passes and sounds great just putting it on input enable. Locator II works perfect as well. There are at least $3000 in perfect parts alone on this baby. A little TLC dropping a new transport and you have a gem that will give you years of a secret weapon giving you better sound than any DAW could ever give you. Any engineer with at least 15 years experience will tell you that you can't beat 16 track 2" on drums, guitar and bass.
