Ampex 440b US $450

Ampex 440b _01
Ampex 440b _02

FROM EBAY SELLER

This 440b is currently a full track with extra electronics, cabling, and a headstack to convert to a 2 track.
The extra headstack I have currently has working erase and playback heads, but the record head only works on one side.
I contacted a company in Chicago, and found it would cost $200-$300 to replace the record head.
I find it very useful as a fulltrack, and it sounds amazingly good.
Everything functions as it should.

Ampex MM1100 16 track 2″ Recorder TAPE MACHINE US $4,750

Ampex MM1100_1

Ampex MM1100_0

FROM SELLER:
"Up for sale is an Ampex MM1100 16 track 2" tape machine. The 16 track Ampex with 'black heads' is arguably one of the finest sounding analog tape recorders ever produced. This particular machine has had extensive maintenance performed recently in order to restore it to prime operating condition. This work was professionally carried out by JRF Magnetics and Analog Domain Inc. The description of the work from the previous owner who had it restored is as follows:

I recall that I purchased a set of used heads from JRF Magnetics in New Jersey and they had a great deal of life left in them. Something like 80 percent on the record and 50 percent on the playback. They polished the heads and completely checked them out and sent them to me with a head report. I then sent the machine to Analog Domain in Tempe Arizona (http://www.analogdomaininc.com/). Andy (of A.D.) then went through the Machine and and brought it up to specs. It was fully functioning and good to go when I sold it. I believe the refurbish cost me around $3600 from A.D. alone.

Indeed, the JRF head report from 2008 shows that the head life is outstanding. The erase head was new, the record head has 80% life, and the repro head has 50%!!! In other words, these heads will likely outlive you! Also, of note, these are the sonically coveted and highly sought after black heads, known for their superior low end response to the silver heads used on later machines. Of note, the MM1200 that sold last week for $5300 had remaining head life of only 20%!!!

As you can see, this machine has had over $3600 in maintenance and restoration, not including the cost of the virtually new 16 track heads. "
