It is in good working condition. I got it from a friend who was the first owner and who used it regularly and maintained it well.
Sounds classic and is fun and easy to work with creatively. Something about working with a vintage reel to reel really keeps the mind calm and able to focus on the music.
They were discontinued due to high cost of production and they remain kind of the flagship of Tascam Reel to Reel home recording. Just one of those moments when a company nails it. The Tascam 85-16B is a 16-track record/reproduce deck, which utilizes 1-inch tape at 15 I/S (IPS or inches per second).It was one of the first production model 1 inch 16-tracks and is THE first of its kind which had class-A discreet amplifiers using Field Effect Transistors in the front ends. This means no crossovers distortion cutting into the ambience captured by the tape instead of overloading suddenly like many IC based circuits, it saturates very smoothly like the tape itself. It uses the IEC standard EQ alignment, which allows more headroom; less perceived noise and less phase shift than the traditional NAB standard, which is more common for multi-track tape machines used in the United States. They were manufactured from about 1979 to 1984.
This Tascam 85-16B comes with Quantegy 499 Grand Master Gold reel, a Tascam RP-85b Amp, a Tascam DX-16B Noise Reducer and a Tascam PS-85b Power Supply Unit."

"I am selling my Tascam 388 Studio 8 Mixer and Reel to Reel recorder. We're expecting our first child this month so I am clearing out equipment that I can still operate without. The 388 has served me for many many years and is working extremely well. I just took it all apart to inspect it and changed the capstan belt. The belt is brand new so should last for a long time to come. The tape heads are clean as well. While I had the unit apart I gave it a good cleaning. The unit records onto 1/4" tape, which I have 6 reels I am included, 4 of them have never been used and still have the tape on them to show they are new. The mixer is a great 8 channel mixer with 3 band EQ, two aux sends per channel. Each channel has a preamp / dedicated VU, which all lamps are working, none are burnt out. The workflow for this unit is great. There is a monitoring section which you can isolate each channel for pan and gain. The counter seems to be in good working order, I tested it doing rewind, play, fast forward and RTZ."

I had it serviced when I got it at a TASCAM service center, they aligned the heads and replaced the belt, and did everything it needed. All lights and functions work. I personally cleaned this unit - detailed it is more like it, and always kept it under a dust cover. No nastiness or grime "

"FOR SALE one Tascam ATR60 16 track 1" analog recorder. I am the third owner. 1st was a company that used it in a show. 2nd was a soundman from Jacksonville. It sat in his house. He said the machine had about 40 hours on it. Ad about 5 hours for me. It sounds good. It really looks just about new. So I am guessing the heads have about 50 hours on them. It runs at 15 or 30 ips. Has noise reduction. This is the newest deck I have ever owned. No heads report. I only recorded once with the machine,so I is not fully tested. The 10 or so channels I used sounded pretty calibrated. There are extra sync devices that come with the deck. They might need an extra cable not included. The arm remote and the rew ff play remotes have the cables included. It has a sticker on the back that said reconditioned. I know not what it means. The machine is great looking. I have a MCI 2" machine that I use so I don't need this one. Sold as is no returns unless doa."
